This painting was done in my second semester of grade 12 (2011) as a self directed project and was one of the pieces included in my application portfolio to Emily Carr. Now that I've been accepted I wanted to share it here! ;u;

I'll share the write up that accompanied it so people can understand the ideas I was trying to work into the pieces. It was a good idea to begin with, but looking back I don't think I executed it all that well, and the write up could have been better.
The violet sea in this piece symbolizes the pollution and all the poisons that people have brought to the world. The vase is referenced from an ancient piece of pottery and symbolizes art. I believe that art is a valuable tool that can be used to bring awareness and positive change to issues happening in the world. Panda bears and many other animals are now in danger of becoming extinct because of rising climate temperatures, pollution, and loss of habitat due to human activity. Lastly, the skull represents humankind, who is not only harming the earth, but itself along with it.

The vase design is referenced from an a very old piece of pottery I saw in a national geographic article, but I'm not sure which one.

36 x 28cm acrylic paint on canvas

your traditional work is always so gorgeous, and it's so interesting to see something that's different than your usual style, esp. one focused on concept! ' v '

aaaah the purple sea ;_; when i saw this picture, it felt poisonous right away because of the purple (well, and the skull XD; ) i found it interesting you used purple and not green since green is a poison colour too! but it's also a colour of nature so that makes lovely sense *-*
i love how you incorporated several objects that combined to prove your point - like the panda standing on the edge of hte vase feels like it's going to fall (since vases and stuff don't really float evenly on water if it's turbulent) and yet the skull seems to also be pushing it, and holding it at the same time if that makes sense? i think at that angle it would tip the vase so the hole would angle down to the sea (um.. filling it with water. orz) ;;;; this is just my super amateur reading LOL i'm sorry if i destroyed your picture with it TT-TT

;;; um, i'll stop writing a book now OOPS HAHA!
SORRY I JUST KIND OF SPILL EVERYTHING IN MY COMMENTS *V*;
<3<3<3 i really love seeing different kinds of works, though! i always read your descriptions because they make it feel so much more... depth-filled. *o*
